Eggs Are the New Carrots: Eat ‘Em for Good Vision

The effect of nutrition on vision isn’t late breaking news. We’ve all heard that carrots are good for our eyes—and now eggs have been found to be beneficial as well.

A 15-year study of people 49 and older has revealed that consuming two or more eggs a week reduced wet age-related macular degeneration (wAMD) by 62% compared to those who ate one egg or fewer.

wAMD is an age-related eye disorder causing blurring or blind spots. It’s typically caused by blood vessels that leak blood or other fluid into the macula, the part of the retina responsible for central vision. Eggs, as it turns out, are rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, both being high in antioxidants that might help prevent wAMD.

How do you know if you’re at risk? Regular vision exams can reveal signs of wAMD as well as high blood pressure, diabetes and other conditions. A low-cost vision plan available through your association and AMBA can also help you keep your eyes healthy while saving hundreds of dollars on eye care and eyewear.

In the meantime, don’t be surprised if your optometrist asks you how you like your eggs.
