Long-Term Care: A Lesson in Asking for Help

While many of us are good at giving help, asking for it is another story. We think it’s uncool. We’re afraid we’ll appear weak, give up control, or be a burden. None of these assumptions, of course, is true. Here’s the reality:

Asking for help is an act of intelligence. It’s a win-win—for you and for the helpers who live to help people like you.

Control is an illusion. We have influence, but not control. No matter how much effort we put into staying healthy, our bodies are ultimately subject to the laws of nature.

We become a burden by not asking for help. Sticking our head in the sand will only end up causing more mental, emotional and financial stress for our loved ones.

According to the Department of Health and Human Services, more than half of Americans turning 65 will need long-term care and services. Medicare, however, covers only about 12% of long-term care costs nationally. And, it will pay no more than 100 days. Personal care such as dressing, eating, and bathroom assistance isn’t always paid for, and coverage of in-home care is limited.

This is where your AMBA agent comes in. AMBA agents are helpers. They can help you determine if a long-term care policy, endorsed by your association, is right for you. Is there a plan that covers quality care and services while helping to protect your retirement savings?

All you have to do is ask.
