Why So Many Vision Problems Go Unseen

2020 is the year to think about 20/20 vision. However, according to Dr. Chris Marquardt, former president of the Wisconsin Optometric Association, good vision doesn’t necessarily equal good health.

“There are a lot of conditions that can be detected in regular exam,” he points out. “You may go years without seeing any sorts of signs or symptoms. Glaucoma, macular degeneration, and even systemic issues like diabetes or high blood pressure can be going on and you would never know it.”

According to a recent study by the American Optometric Association, as many as 16 million Americans have undiagnosed and untreated vision impairments, and in a recent study, only 54% of respondents get an annual comprehensive eye exam, which is still the safest way to check your eye health according to Marquardt.

“We’re seeing a lot more changes in technology now,” he says. “You may have seen companies promoting on-line eye exams tele-health but there’s a lot more specialized observation that has to be done in person.”

These days, visiting an optometrist can be costly. An exam and glasses averages around $400. Fortunately, a vision plan from your association and AMBA could help you save hundreds on everything from exams to eyewear. Learn more online or call 866-979-0497.
