Heartwarming News About Hot Peppers

If you like hot peppers, a new study by the Mediterranean Neurological Institute in Italy could give you reason to love them wholeheartedly.

Among 25,000 participants monitored over eight years, the risk of dying from a heart attack was 40% lower among those eating chili peppers at least four times a week.

Though researchers have yet to pinpoint the root of the positive benefits, some dieticians who weren’t involved in the study believe that consumption of chili peppers are suggestive of overall healthier eating habits; if you’re eating peppers regularly, you’re more likely to be eating more fresh foods.

“This could suggest how chilis are used as part of an overall dietary pattern and lifestyle,” says Duane Mellor of Aston Medical School in the U.K. “It is plausible that people who eat chilis, as the data suggests, also use more herbs and spices, and are likely to be eating more fresh foods including vegetables.”

Hot peppers are a great way to spice things up—and healthier than processed alternatives. Another option to consider: If you feel you’re at risk for heart disease, a heart policy from your association and AMBA could help cover specialized treatments not covered by Medicare.
